How to reduce GIF file size
Animated GIF files store a sequence of indexed-color frames. Large dimensions, complex colors and numerous frames all increase file size. This tool lets you change three major factors directly in your browser.
- Resize: Try 75% of the original width and height. Smaller frames contain fewer pixels.
- Reduce colors: Try a 64-color palette for illustrations and simple animation. Photographic GIFs may need more colors.
- Sample frames: Keeping every second frame reduces frame count while preserving approximate animation duration, but motion becomes less smooth.
- Compare output: Download only if the result looks good and is smaller. Re-encoding can sometimes increase file size.
For best results, compress illustrations, icons and short loops. Complex cinematic footage often looks better in MP4 or animated WebP, especially at larger sizes.
GIF compression questions
Does this tool upload my GIF?
No. GIF decoding, processing and export happen locally inside your browser.
Why did my compressed GIF become larger?
Every GIF has a different palette and frame structure. Re-encoding is not guaranteed to reduce size; try a smaller output, fewer colors or stronger frame sampling.
Can I compress a transparent animated GIF?
The editor attempts to preserve one-bit GIF transparency. Some complex disposal effects and partial transparency may render differently; check the output before sharing.
Is there a file limit?
The current browser editor supports GIF files up to 15 MB, up to 120 frames and up to one million source pixels.
